I created this list of Classroom Procedures for Technology Use during
my student teaching experience. Students need guidelines for
using computers and calculators in the mathematics classroom, and as
with behavioral rules, it is preferable to post the regulations in
writing rather than simply tell students what is expected of
them. This list of procedures and rules could be used by any
mathematics teacher who uses computers, the Internet, or calculators as
instructional aides.
Impact
This list of procedures supports teaching and classroom management by
providing a framework for technology use; hopefully, teacher time may
be spent in helping students learn concepts instead of helping deal
with technology issues.
Alignment
This set of classroom rules serves to manage an aspect of student
learning activities involving technology, thus demonstrating competence
in NETS-T standard III-D.
Since this list of procedures gives students direction about using the
Internet, a source of appropriate and extremely inappropriate
information for school use, standard VI-D
for promoting healthy use of technology resources is
satisfied. The procedures dictate to students the
need to cite sources of information when using the Internet (as
well as what information should be recorded), and also discuss the
possibility of honor-code violations (cheating) when using the
calculator. This aspect of the artifact teaches legal and ethical
practices, and thus demonstrates standard VI-A
and NCATC standard 14.1.
